How to Make a Successful Internet Business Selling What People Want to Buy

I first learned about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Services five years ago when my web design clients wanted to know how they would get a return on their investment after getting a new website...yet another Expert Search Engine Optimizer was born. I felt like I had found the holy grail for a few reasons when I started learning how to make a successful internet business selling my client's products and services.

First of all, there are a lot of web designers out there, but many of them are so creative that they don't want to dirty their hands with the number intensive world of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Services
where we live and die by our website statistics. Secondly and most importantly, focusing on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Services gave my firm a niche that differentiated us from the many other web design firms out there, since a search engine optimized site is one of the most economical ways to get your website to generate business.

Why is a search engine optimized site better? The number one rule in
how to make a successful internet business selling products and/or services is to sell something that people want. It seems really simple, but many business owners try to sell things that they THINK people want, instead of really doing the research and finding out what they REALLY want.

So how do you find out what people want? You do the one thing that should be the foundation of any good
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) or Search Engine Optimized Website Design campaign. You perform a keyword research for the product or services that you are selling. In order to capture the people who are looking for a solution you can provide, you need to understand what, exactly, they are looking for.

The search engines are just an big electronic yellow pages. The great thing about the yellow pages is that people use it when they are ready to buy and it can lead them directly to your business. That same concept applies to the search engines. The terms or keywords phrases that people use to search for information, products, or services can lead them directly to your website if your site is optimized well. The internet marketers mantra should be "Learning how to increase my web traffic and convert visitors will increase the revenue that my site generates for my business.".

The first step in that process is to do a little keyword research. You’ll hear people talk about key words, tags, titles, meta tags, key word densities, etc. With keyword research you will be able to identify the words and phrases which will bring you the most qualified traffic (note: I said qualified – just getting traffic to your site is pretty meaningless if you cannot convert them to customers). Just like finding a niche in business is important to differentiate your company from your competitors, finding a niche with your keyword research is one of the most important factors in successfully optimizing your site for the search engines. Your goal is to find keywords that are used by a lot of people, but have not been used on a lot of other websites.

In offline direct response marketing, the key to the really big money is in finding huge universes of people likely to have the problem you can solve. The same is true online but you have to consider the number of sources available. While there are thousands and thousands of mailing lists out there, there are really only three major search engines: Google, Yahoo and MSN. Over 90% of all the searches performed daily are done on these three search engines and Google is the undisputed leader with over 60% percent of all those coming through Google.

Here are the basic steps involved in keyword research:
• Determine keywords/phrases. (Use this information to determine if you have a viable audience.)
• Use this information to create a site theme.
• Use this information to give your site the right domain name.
• Use this information to name pages, name images, develop meta tags and write content around within the site itself.

The next installment of this SEO Training will talk more about keyword research and how to incorporate the keywords into your site.

Google and YouTube: The American Dream is Alive and Serving Up Video to the Masses

Unless you've been under a rock for the past couple of days, I am sure you have heard about Google's latest acquisition. I mean I even saw it on the Ellen show this morning, so the news has officially reached the masses.

Google bought the online video/social networking site YouTube for 1.65 Billion dollars. (Yes I said BILLION.) While other sites and blogs are talking about how much of a bargain it was or was not or about how Google may get a return on their investment by monetizing the visitors or how Google can save YouTube from potential legal copyright issues, I want to talk about what this purchase means to the Internet entrepreneur.

It is yet another reminder that the American dream is alive and hanging out with two young Internet entrepreneurs who launched a small site a little over a year ago (February 2005 to be exact) called YouTube with a little bit of seed money. That site has now grown quickly into one of the most popular websites on the Internet. It's subscribers and visitors view over 100 million videos every day and the site has an estimated 72 million individual visitors each month.

So why did Google buy a video site when they already had Google Video? I am sure there are many reasons, but here is what Google's chief executive Eric Schmidt had to say,

"The YouTube team has built an exciting and powerful media platform that
complements Google's mission to organize the world's information and make it
universally accessible and useful..."

The chief executive said the two companies were "natural partners" to offer a media entertainment service to users, content owners and advertisers. He also said that YouTube will be one of many investments that Google plans to make in the online video arena.

I think it's kind of funny, because he almost made it sound like this was an altruistic acquisition that would somehow make the world a better place by allowing people to see funny videos. Isn't that America's Funniest Home Videos' mission statement? Regardless, we all know that the purchase was made for one big reason...EYES. Acquiring an online entity with 72 million unique visitors per month is almost like being able to print your own money. I highlighted the word Advertisers, because that is what this is really all about. When you have a site with that many visitors, you can attract any and every big time advertiser and generate millions and millions of advertising revenue.

So what is the lesson learned from all of this? As I have said...The American Dream is Alive and Well. And the purchase of YouTube should motivate the Internet entrepreneur and let them know that the .com boom may not be dead just yet. Google said themselves that they are going to make a few more millionaires or billionaires in the near future.

You should also know that if you do a good job at building up traffic to your site, you can monetize (generate money from) your visitors with Google Adsense, Yahoo Publisher Network, Online Advertising (i.e. Adbrite.com), etc..

And remember...if you get enough traffic, you just may be getting a call from Google or some other large online entity that will pay top dollar just to get control of the EYES. YouTube was not the first and will not be the last, but I do wonder who will be the next...
